About Us

Our mission to serve and commitment to excell

We would like to take the time to welcome you to Capstone Women’s Health Obstetrics and Gynecology.   Capstone Women’s Health was founded to provide the highest level of compassionate Gynecological and Obstetrical care to women of our community.   Our commitment to you is driven by the desire to realize the best outcomes by ensuring the highest quality of care during your pregnancy, health maintenance or surgical experience.   We provide all aspects of women’s health care from early adolescence to well beyond menopause, a lifetime.  We strongly believe in the woman being the center of any and all care decisions made with access to the latest evidence-based guidelines and research.  Our team is highly trained and brings a wealth of experience to Capstone and women of this community.   We look forward to enjoying a rewarding and caring relationship with you and your family.

Our Obstetrician/Gynecologist, Dr. Daniel Schubert, has been in Alaska for almost 10 years and happily calls this home.   He was born in Ohio, but raised in the deep south, Louisiana.   He spent almost 30 years in Louisiana and attended college at Louisiana Tech University, graduating with a B.S. in Zoology/Biology in 1994.   He subsequently attended the LSU School of Medicine and received his M.D. in 1998.    He followed this with a 4 year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology with emphasis on advanced pelvic and reconstructive surgery and high risk obstetrics.  After residency, in 2002, he made his first trip to Alaska with the U.S. Air Force and immediately fell in love with the people, wide open spaces and amazing vistas.   From that point forward, Alaska became an integral part of his life.   Even when he left with the Air Force in 2005, he came back every year to visit friends and fly fish.   Eventually, he found his way back to Alaska in 2011, this time as a civilian, and started growing roots in the community.  He has been fortunate enough to watch some of the children that he delivered when he first arrived in 2002, grow into young adults.  Dr. Schubert was also fortunate enough to train with a gifted pelvic surgeon during residency and maintained a long-term relationship with this mentor.   He eventually mastered these skills as a professor and the Director of Gynecology and Pelvic Surgery at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine.   He has been responsible for the training of many other gynecologic physicians in complex pelvic surgery, prolapse, incontinence and almost all other aspects of gynecological care.  His obstetric training was vast and encompassed care of normal and high-risk pregnancies, multi-fetal pregnancies, mothers with chronic illness and high risk deliveries.   Since residency, he has maximized his skills and experience in obstetrics and gynecology and enjoys caring for mothers through easy pregnancies or difficult ones.   He also really enjoys meeting the newborns at delivery and welcoming them to their first birthday party!

Our model of care involves determining the individual needs of the woman and tailoring her care to her medical, emotional and personal needs.   From obstetrical care to surgical care to health maintenance, your care is determined by who YOU are, not what age group or demographics you belong to.   Even with complex gynecological issues or obstetric issues, we never forget that this a person with these issues, not a set of issues to be treated.

We look forward to meeting you and thank you for allowing us to part of your care.

Gynecology, Urogynecology and Pelvic Surgery

At Capstone Women’s Health, we provide a comprehensive, evidence based approach to many gynecologic issues.  Our extensive training as well as teaching of gynecology brings a vast experience to your concerns.  Of importance to us it the realization of not only the condition, but what effect it is having on you.  We believe that your perspective about the issue is of principal concern; and we strive to understand your perception.  Once we have identified your concern and the condition, we develop a plan for addressing it based on your desires.  We believe in working hand-in-hand with you to develop treatments that satisfy your concerns.  Each plan is individually tailored to meet your unique needs.  Our surgical cases are performed at Mat-Su Regional Medical center.  We will also soon be available at the Surgery Center of Wasilla.

Gynecology encompasses any condition with the female reproductive organs or in the location of these organs.  The problems can be numerous and could potentially involve any of the components of the reproductive system either in form or function.  Some of the more common issues women seek gynecological care for are menstrual abnormalities, endometriosis, sexually transmitted infections, abnormal PAP smears, pelvic pain, pain with intercourse.  There are many others.  If you have a question if a condition or concern is related to gynecology, do not hesitate to contact us at (link)

Urogynecology involves the function of the female urinary bladder and urethra.   As these are anatomically related to and in close proximity to the reproductive organs, some gynecologists have training and experience in managing various conditions involving the bladder and urethra.   The most common condition seen is urinary leakage, also known as incontinence.   Any urinary leakage is considered abnormal and can potentially be improved.   There are multiple types of leakage, all of which are treated differently.  Some can be managed medically, some require physical therapy and some require surgery.   Determining which type of leakage you have involves history, examination and sometimes specialized testing.   Our physician is skilled in evaluating and treating urinary incontinence and other forms of bladder dysfunction.

Pelvic surgery and minimally invasive surgery

Pelvic surgery is surgery of and around the female genital tract and reproductive organs to treat multiple different conditions. Minimally invasive surgery is approaching these procedures with the smallest incision(s) possible to minimize discomfort and recovery time. While minimally invasive surgery provides for a quicker recovery, not every person is a candidate for minimally invasive procedures. This will be determined by you and your physician. While surgery should be a last resort for any condition, if you find yourself needing surgery, our physician is skilled in gynecological surgery, including correcting previous procedures that have failed.  Conditions that tend to be treated surgically include fibroids, abnormal bleeding, pelvic organ prolapse (bladder, rectum, uterus), urinary and fecal incontinence. There are many approaches to gynecologic surgery and these are usually decided based upon the patient, the condition being treated and assessing each approach for the safety. Our physician is skilled in minimally invasive approaches including vaginal surgery and laparoscopic surgery as well as abdominal surgery for very complex cases or where a minimally invasive approach is inappropriate or unsafe.

Obstetrics

At Capstone Women’s Health, we are as excited about your pregnancy as you are!  Our goal is to provide you with care and compassion that makes this journey one of wonder, discovery and happiness.   Pregnancy is a unique experience whether it is your first pregnancy or if you are a veteran.  We are here to provide the most up-to-date information, care, and pathways to adding your new family addition.

Our model of care starts with the first OB visit where you will meet Dr. Schubert, review your history, have a physical examination, discuss care during your pregnancy and usually have an ultrasound to verify gestational age.   Many recommendations in pregnancy are based on accurate dating, thus establishing this as early as possible is of greatest importance.  You will also be able to discuss your preferences regarding your pregnancy, prenatal care and delivery.

Pregnancy is a time to ensure the best health of a mother and baby.  To accomplish this, frequent visits, once a month, will occur up to 28 weeks of pregnancy and become more frequent until delivery.  At the first visit, you will have blood work done to ensure a healthy mom at the outset.  At each subsequent visit, you will have weight, blood pressure and urine evaluations as well as measurements of baby’s growth and listening to the heartbeat.  At any visit, an ultrasound examination may be recommended to check on baby’s growth or fluid.   We also recommend anatomy ultrasounds between 18 and 22 weeks to look at the structures of the developing baby.   At each visit, we look to ensure that mom and baby are meeting expected milestones.   We also discuss various topics throughout pregnancy including:

  •                 Genetic screening (optional)
  •                 Hemoglobin testing
  •                 Glucose testing (to look for gestational diabetes)
  •                 Group B strep testing
  •                 Delivery preferences
  •                 Any maternal or fetal concerns noted at any visit
  •                 Post-partum needs (breast-feeding, contraception)

We deliver our babies at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center.  Please visit the link to learn more about the Birthing Center. Our goal for prenatal care and delivery is that of a happy and healthy mother and baby. To achieve this, your physician has extensive training in managing pregnancies, low and high-risk, twin pregnancies, mothers with medical conditions, and many others. Your physician is also well-trained in other delivery options including forceps or vacuum if the patient desires, as well as cesarean sections, especially repeat cesareans and those anticipated to be complex. You will be offered an evidence-based medical opinion; but ultimately, we desire that you are the decision-maker for your pregnancy. Your doctor will guide you through all of the options as well as risks and benefits of each. We desire this to be a wonderful experience and are honored that you chose us to share it with you.
